About the Role
Schoolreaders is looking for volunteers to support children in local primary schools by helping them build reading confidence and skills. With only 1 in 3 children saying they read for pleasure in their free time, this role provides valuable support at an important stage in a child’s development.

 

What You'll Do
As a volunteer, you will visit a local primary school for 1–2 hours each week during term time. You will listen to children read on a one-to-one basis, helping them practise reading, develop comprehension, and build confidence. You will also encourage a positive attitude towards reading and help children enjoy books.

 

Skills and Attributes
You should be aged 18 or over and have good written and spoken English. A friendly, patient, and supportive approach is important, along with reliability and a willingness to commit to regular sessions. No previous experience or specific qualifications are required.

Training and Expenses
A DBS check is required and will be provided free of charge. Please note that travel expenses are not reimbursed.

 

Commitment
Volunteers are asked to commit to 1–2 hours per week, at the same time each week during the school day, for at least one year. Holidays and appointments can be accommodated within this period.
