Crew Members Needed – Narrow Boat Beatrice
The narrow boat Beatrice works with schools to support children with additional (special) educational needs, offering them an enjoyable and memorable day out on the water. We operate on the Caldon Canal in North Staffordshire, from our mooring at Cheddleton near Leek.
Outside of school term time, we also welcome adult groups who benefit from our accessible facilities, along with family and social groups that help us raise funds.

The Volunteer Crew Role
Volunteer crew members are essential to the safe and enjoyable running of each trip. All outings are supervised by a qualified volunteer skipper.

Main Duties

Working canal locks
Steering the boat (with guidance)
Preparing the boat at the start of the day
Cleaning and tidying up at the end of the day

With support, passengers — including children — can take part in activities such as working the locks under teacher supervision.

What You’ll Need

Reasonable fitness (due to physical tasks like lock‑working)
Willingness to work as part of a team
Reliability and enthusiasm
Access to a smartphone and email (used for scheduling and communication)

No boating experience is required.

Training & Support

New volunteers receive thorough training
You’ll always work alongside experienced crew members
Training can be provided towards RYA qualifications for those interested in becoming skippers

Time Commitment & Flexibility

We operate up to 7 days a week, April to October
Each trip includes one skipper and two crew members
Volunteers check crew vacancies online and nominate themselves for dates that suit their availability
Typical day:

Boat preparation: around 9:30am
School trips usually finish around 3:00pm
Private group trips may run an hour longer
