Telephone Befriender
Many Deafblind UK members live with a combined sight and hearing loss. This can often lead to loneliness and social isolation.
Deafblind UK offers a free telephone befriending service, matching trained volunteers with members for a 30‑minute weekly phone call. These regular conversations provide companionship, connection, and a vital listening ear.
As a volunteer befriender, you will be matched with one member and share a relaxed weekly chat. Conversations may focus on shared interests, everyday topics, or learning about each other’s lives.
Whatever the subject, your time and attention can make a meaningful difference. For some members, this call may be the only conversation they have that day—or even that week. Our members especially enjoy speaking with volunteers who have life experience and stories to share.
We are seeking people who are:
Confident and friendly communicators
Empathetic, patient, and reliable
Able to hold a natural conversation and put others at ease
Warm, approachable, and good listeners
What we offer
Full training before you begin
Ongoing guidance and support throughout your volunteering
The opportunity to make a genuine, positive impact with just 30 minutes a week
A short, regular phone call may seem simple, but for our members it can provide connection, reassurance, and companionship when it is needed most.
