About the Role
Honeycomb Group provides homes and support services across Staffordshire, including affordable housing, domestic abuse refuge, and homelessness support through its brand, Concrete. We are looking for a Lead Volunteer to oversee and facilitate weekly gardening sessions for customers who have experienced homelessness and other complex needs.
What You'll Do
In this role, you will plan and deliver gardening sessions at Festival Heights Allotments, tailoring activities to meet the needs of participants and using a creative approach to engage them. You will support customers in learning how to grow plants, herbs, and vegetables, while encouraging them to take ownership of the space.
You will help maintain the allotment, including tasks such as weeding, mowing, pruning, and clearing leaves, as well as using tools like lawnmowers and hedge trimmers. The role also involves liaising with the Community & Tenancy Sustainability Team Leader regarding maintenance and supplies, ensuring health and safety practices are followed, and keeping records up to date. You may also contribute to planning seasonal planting, maintaining risk assessments, and identifying funding opportunities to support the project.
Skills and Attributes
You should have a good knowledge of horticulture and experience managing a garden or allotment. The role requires a reasonable level of physical fitness due to the hands-on nature of the work. Strong communication skills, flexibility to adapt to weather and seasonal changes, and an understanding of risk assessments are important. A willingness to complete training and continue developing your skills is also required.
Benefits to You
This role offers the opportunity to share your horticultural knowledge while supporting individuals to build confidence, skills, and independence. You will play a key role in a community-focused project and help create a positive, inclusive environment.
Training and Expenses
Training will be provided, and you will be supported in developing your skills and knowledge relevant to the role. A DBS check is required.
Location and Commitment
The role is primarily based at Festival Heights Allotments, Greyhound Way, Stoke-on-Trent, ST6 3LQ, with occasional visits to the head office at 308 London Road, Stoke, ST4 5AB. The commitment is approximately 5–10 hours per week.
