Chess Group Support in Libraries
CLaY: Communities, Libraries and You Project
As part of the CLaY: Communities, Libraries and You Project, we are recruiting volunteers to support Chess Groups in libraries, with a focus on adult wellbeing.
These groups provide a welcoming, social space where adults can play chess, learn new skills, and connect with others in their local community.
The Volunteer Role
We’re looking for friendly volunteers who feel confident:
Welcoming new members to the group
Sharing their knowledge of chess and helping teach others
Encouraging participants to get involved
Creating a relaxed and inclusive atmosphere
Helping promote the group within local communities
What We Provide
All resources, materials, and equipment
Free tea and coffee for sessions
Relevant induction and ongoing support
You don’t need to organise materials — just bring your enthusiasm and people skills.
Who We’re Looking For
Friendly with strong social skills
Warm and caring, able to engage well with people
Patient, with good listening skills
Knowledge and skills in chess
Able to use initiative and creativity
Willing to commit as little as 2 hours per week
If you feel you could support Stoke‑on‑Trent Libraries to set up and run Chess Groups, we would love to welcome you as a volunteer and help support adult wellbeing through shared activity and connection.
