Volunteer Opportunity: Bereavement Support Groups in Libraries
CLaY: Communities, Libraries and You
As part of CLaY: Communities, Libraries and You, Stoke‑on‑Trent Libraries are setting up Bereavement Support Groups within library spaces.
These groups will offer a relaxed, social environment where people can come together to talk about loved ones they have lost, or simply spend time with others who share an experience of grief. There is no pressure to speak — people are welcome to talk as much or as little as they wish.
We aim to provide:
A warm space
A warm drink
A warm welcome
for anyone who may need a little extra support.
The Volunteer Role
We are looking for caring volunteers who understand that grief, loss, and bereavement can be lonely and isolating experiences.
As a volunteer, you will:
Welcome people to the group and help them feel comfortable
Provide a sympathetic, non‑judgemental listening ear
Help participants make connections with others in the group
Support a safe and respectful group atmosphere
Signpost individuals to other community groups and professional organisations when appropriate
Training & Support
Full training provided
Regular volunteer meetings and wellbeing sessions
Ongoing support as part of the CLaY project
Who We’re Looking For
Friendly and approachable with strong social skills
Warm, caring, and able to engage sensitively with others
Patient, with good listening skills
Knowledge of useful community support services (or willingness to learn)
Able to commit for 12 months (ideally)
If you feel confident supporting others through conversation, connection, and gentle signposting — and would like to help create a safe, welcoming space for people experiencing bereavement — we would love to hear from you.
