About the Role
CareLink is looking for volunteers to support older people who may be experiencing isolation due to health issues, bereavement, or reduced confidence. Through telephone befriending and the KOKU Digital Exercise Programme, you will help individuals stay connected, active, and independent. Our aim is to ensure that later life is not a lonely life.
What You'll Do
As a volunteer, you may support our Telephone Befriending Service by making regular weekly calls, offering conversation, reassurance, and a consistent point of contact. You may also support practical wellbeing by helping individuals stay on track with daily routines such as medication, appointments, and general health.
Within the KOKU Digital Exercise Programme, you could take on roles such as mentoring and motivating participants, preparing and serving refreshments, or supporting sessions as a driver or chaperone. You may assist in group sessions held in retirement village settings or provide one-to-one support in people’s homes. These activities help individuals improve strength, confidence, and social connection.
Skills and Attributes
We are looking for volunteers who are friendly, approachable, and reliable, with good communication skills. You should be caring, non-judgemental, and able to respect confidentiality. An interest in supporting older people and promoting health and wellbeing is important. Basic computer skills can be helpful but are not essential.
Benefits to You
This role offers the opportunity to gain new skills, build confidence, and enhance your CV. You will meet new people, be part of a supportive team, and experience the satisfaction of making a meaningful difference in someone’s life. Many volunteers also report improved wellbeing from giving back to their community.
Training and Expenses
Full training is provided, including areas such as safeguarding, confidentiality, and boundaries. Training takes approximately 2–3 hours and can be completed in one or more sessions, either in person or via Zoom. You will receive ongoing support from a dedicated member of staff, and reasonable expenses, including travel, will be reimbursed. An enhanced DBS check is required and will be arranged and funded.
Hours and Commitment
Volunteers are asked to commit around 2 hours per week for at least 3 months. Opportunities include group sessions (2 hours per week) and one-to-one support at times that suit you and the client. Sessions are delivered across Stoke-on-Trent, including locations such as Abbey Hulton and Blurton.
