Strengthening collaboration between SEND, education, health, and social care to improve the uptake and quality of
annual health checks (AHC) for children and young people with a learning disability

Children and young people with a learning disability are more likely to be impacted by health inequalities and have poorer health than the general population. Since 2014/15, all children and young people with a learning disability should be included on GP learning disability registers, and young people aged 14 and over should be offered an annual health check. They are critical to improving health and wellbeing and reducing premature death.
In October 2021, education and SEND, health, and social care colleagues across the Midlands came together to look at opportunities to work better together to improve the uptake and quality of annual health checks for children and young people with a learning disability.
The event generated lots of rich information and enthusiasm for how we can collaborate between health, social care, SEND, and education and what needed to happen to improve the uptake and experience of annual
health checks for children and young people.
Improving uptake and experience of AHCs for CYP – Slides As promised, we have taken away everything that was discussed and worked with partners to develop a draft framework to support improvement, articulating what good might look like and the graduated actions for systems to get us there.
We are now hosting a second event, to bring partners together once again, to look at how we translate our ideas for improvement into action and the support that is needed to do so.
