A VAST Volunteering Case Study
Johura's Volunteer Journey
Johura is one of the amazing volunteers that volunteers in the role of an Inclusive Volunteer Buddy for VAST.
Gloria initially met with Johura at ASHA and arranged for Johura to attend a meeting to discuss volunteering.
Johura is originally from Bangladesh where she worked as a Primary School teacher, Human Rights worker and Journalist. Johura wanted to “give something back” to the community and support others, whilst improving her English language skills so volunteering was the natural step for Johura to do this.
Just some of the duties that Johura supports with are:
- Working in partnership with Project Officers who specialise in volunteering to identify supportive placements.
- Supporting, listening to, and encouraging individuals who lack confidence to recognise their own potential.
- Attending any relevant team meetings and training required for the role.
- Completing basic logs of interactions with volunteers or sessions with voluntary sector organisations.
Johura volunteers each week and is a tremendous asset to VAST.
“I wanted to become a volunteer as I want to help other people, gain satisfaction and I was aware that volunteering was a great platform to do something for others.”
Johura explained that even from childhood she liked to help other people, as it makes her feel cheerful, happy, and satisfied.
“My happiness… I’m not as stressed as I was because I forget about my previous life as I become totally involved in my volunteering role”
Johura on how volunteering has benefitted her
Johura explained that her communication skills have improved as well as bonding and making new friends. She also said that when she started, her confidence was low but now “my confidence is increasing daily, volunteering is a great platform to increase happiness and make friends for life as well as being blessed by others.”
“Once upon a time I felt that I was alone with my daughter in this world but now, after volunteering, I feel I’m no longer alone and have lots of support and friends."
Wow what a fantastic volunteer journey Johura has made!
Well done, Johura!
