Identifying and Countering Misinformation | Training

Misinformation can spread quickly, easily, and often unintentionally – both online and offline. This misinformation can be a threat to community cohesion, trust in VCSE and statutory services, and the effectiveness of the support our sector offers.

This practical session is designed to help your organisation recognise and respond to misinformation in ways that strengthen relationships and build resilience within communities.

We will cover:

  • How to identify trustworthy and reliable news sources and verify information before sharing.
  • Common signs of misinformation and disinformation, and how to spot them.
  • Techniques for challenging misinformation without escalating conflict.
  • Using lived experience and community assets to counter false narratives and promote accurate, inclusive messaging.
  • Strategies for fostering trust and cohesion within your communities.

Misinformation can undermine confidence in services and community leaders, and create divisions within communities. By learning how to spot and address it effectively, you’ll help protect your organisation’s reputation, support informed decision-making, and strengthen community trust.
