A VAST Community Development Case Study
A Day of Action | Making Great Places: Shelton
Community clean up in Shelton, Stoke-on-Trent,
brings true community spirit for Making Great Places!
On Tuesday 16th December, more than 60 members of the Shelton community came together in Hanley Park for a ‘Day of Action’ and community engagement.
The community spirit was all around during this exciting day, and together with VAST, partners from all over the city to support and take part, with contributions from:
- Staffordshire Police.
- Stoke-on-Trent City Council and trading Standards.
- Black Onyx.
- TS Domestics.
- the Community Foundations for Staffordshire and Shropshire.
- Brickhouse.
- Friends of Hanley Park.
- Canal and River Trust.
- Ulysses Youth.
- Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce.
- Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).
Activities for this collaborative effort included a knife and blade sweep, litter picking, canal-side cleanup, community intelligence sharing, local business standards assessments, and modern slavery spot-checks.
Those who have recently fallen on hard times were also supported through the rough sleeping team, as well as sweeps of derelict properties on Pyenest Street to ensure no one was at risk in condemned buildings.
A HUGE thank you to all who got their hands dirty and really got involved for a great showcase of community spirit and collaborative working! Making Great Places will continue through 2026 with more days like this planned to take place in both Shelton and Tunstall to improve community connection, empower residents and support local services so all can thrive!
