A VAST Volunteering case study by Emma Lymer, Project Support Officer
Bernard’s Journey with YMCA
Bernard was just settling into life in the UK and looking for a way to get involved in his local community. He wanted to gain experience, use his skills, and make a positive difference. And so Bernard’s volunteering journey began.
With a professional background in care, Bernard was keen to find a role where he could support others, all while continuing to develop his own skills. During an initial meeting with Project Support Officer Emma, he shared his motivation to give back and help people facing challenges.
Emma supported Bernard, helping him to explore volunteering opportunities that sounded like something he wanted to get involved in, and guided him through the volunteering process with the YMCA. Just a few weeks later, Bernard began volunteering in not one, but two roles at the YMCA.
Supporting the Community
At the YMCA Pantry, Bernard helps to organise food items, prepare distributions, and support people accessing the service. He also drives the minivan to collect and transport supplies. He also volunteers with asylum seekers in his role, where he supports others with practical tasks and helps maintain a welcoming and respectful environment for those attending.
These regular roles give Bernard the opportunity to volunteer twice a week and play an active part in supporting his community.
Building Confidence and Skills
Through his volunteering, Bernard has developed stronger communication and teamwork skills. He has also grown in confidence and gained a deeper understanding of people from different backgrounds and circumstances. One of the most rewarding parts of his experience has been seeing the direct impact of the pantry service on people’s lives.
Recognising Achievement
During his time with the YMCA, Bernard received a certificate of recognition for his hard work and contribution. This acknowledgement has helped to motivate him to continue his volunteering journey.
“Balancing volunteering with work commitments and adjusting to new weekly tasks have been challenging at times, but these experiences have supported my personal and professional development.”
Bernard
“Bernard’s volunteering journey highlights the positive impact of providing clear guidance, structured support, and accessible routes into community roles.”
