Successful recruitment process sees new trustees join VAST
We were delighted to welcome seven new trustees the VAST board recently, with a special introductory day at the Dudson Centre in Hanley.
VAST’s new trustees bring a wealth of work and life experience, and new skills to our board and will help VAST in our work to represent and care about our city and the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector within it.
The new trustees were appointed following a successful recruitment campaign which invited applications for new members to join our board of trustees. We were delighted to receive a brilliant response, with applications from individuals from all walks of life; with a broad range of knowledge, skills and experience and who lived, volunteered, or worked in communities across the local area.
To help our new trustees settle into their new roles, a training session took place today at the Dudson Centre to welcome them to VAST and to provide an opportunity to meet other new trustees so that they could get to know each other and learn more about their role at VAST. This was followed by a networking lunch with other members of the board in the Dudson Museum, and introductions to the team in the VAST office.
At VAST, we believe that the voluntary sector Boards across Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire should reflect the communities they serve so that the board, and those making the decisions, fully understand the issues in their communities and the challenges they face. As part of this, we are constantly reviewing both the needs of our organisation and the makeup of our board of trustees. This means we regularly have opportunities for new board members, and we want to make sure that the board is made up of people who represent and care about our city and the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector within it.
The trustee’s training session is adapted for VAST Trustees, and a more general session is a part of our ongoing training programme, which provides free sessions on a range of topics including trustee responsibilities to VAST members.

Trustees come from all walks of life. You don’t have to be high-flying in your career to have valuable skills to offer, you don’t need to be a solicitor or the CEO of a company. You don’t even have to have a job to bring something special to a board of Trustees. Everyone can bring experience, knowledge, and skills to the role of a trustee. Find out about how you can share your skills here, or why you should become a trustee. We’ve also created two guides to help you become a trustee or recruit them for your organisation.
