The National Network of Parents Carer Forums (NNPCF) has been working in partnership with Contact, Carers UK and National Development Team for Inclusion (NDTi) on a project to support parent carers to support parent carers to navigate the transition from children to adult services as their child approaches the age of 18.
The consortium was funded by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) with the aim of supporting parent carers to navigate the transition from children to adult services as their child approaches the age of 18. This work formed part of the Carers Action Plan 2018-2020 which set out a wide range of ambitions to improve the lives of carers. One of the aspirations was to ensure a more joined up approach to the Care Act 2014 and the Children and Families Act 2014.
New research published by Contact and consortium partners reveals that the vast majority of parent carers (67%) feel that their own outcomes were not considered during transition. This view is shared by many Parent Carer Forums who contributed to the findings and recommendations in a number of ways. Families were key to developing the Preparing for Adult Life information and FAQs, and the information on the Contact webpages is based on feedback received from Parent Carers.
