Posted on behalf of Staffordshire County Council:

Staffordshire County Council are working with Staffordshire Samaritans on a campaign to remind people that the Samaritans Support Line is always open, including over Christmas and New Year.

Wednesday 21st December is the longest night of the year, with the sun setting shortly after 4.00pm. Several Staffordshire County Council buildings (including the Shire Hall Gallery in Stafford) will be lit up green and we are encouraging other organisations to do the same if they can. We are also asking people to show their support by displaying a green light in their window at home, and to display a Samaritans poster with their free telephone number.   We would love it if other partners organisations and individuals could get involved. Our friends working at Samaritans have fed back to us that a surprising number of people in Staffordshire are unaware of the support they provide. However, last year, Samaritans volunteers responded to 244,254 calls in the UK and Ireland over the festive period and this year volunteers in Staffordshire will be there round-the-clock to make sure people always have someone to turn to.

If you look after, or are able to influence the lighting of a Staffordshire landmark, attraction or building and want to join us to illuminate Staffordshire green on 21st December please email Sarah  [email protected] to discuss.

Alternatively, if you can use or share the attached poster and encourage colleagues, partners, friends, and family to join us in putting a green light (and if possible a poster) in a window on the 21st, we would be most grateful. Copies of the poster are attached to this email, including a version which will use less ink for people who may wish to print at home.  A limited number of printed posters and tea lights will also be available for people to take away from all our libraries in Staffordshire from 12th December, and we may be able to provide you with printed A4 or A3 posters directly – please let us know if that would be of interest to you.

As we get closer to the date, we will be promoting this more widely on social media, so see the instructions below on how you can help with this by sharing photographs of your building or just your window ‘lit up green’.

Summary of how you can get involved

We want individuals, organisations, businesses, and attractions to join us to increase awareness that the Samaritans Support Line is always open.

NB. Other sources of support are also available of course, and the poster also includes a QR code which directs people to a list of other organisations across Staffordshire and beyond offering support with mental health. These include:
