100 Years, 100 Faces: A Landmark Mural and Celebration for Stoke-on-Trent
As Stoke-on-Trent marks its centenary in 2025, a remarkable public art project is set to celebrate the people who have shaped the city over the past 100 years.
The ‘100 Years, 100 Faces’ mural is set to be a collaborative creation funded and coordinated by Stoke-on-Trent City Centre BID and set for unveiling this Autumn.
The initiative invites residents and communities across the city to help shape this historic artwork by voting for the individuals to be featured in the city centre situated mural, in collaboration with key voices across the 6 towns. Jonathan Bellamy, Chairman for Stoke-on-Trent City Centre BID said:
“We are calling on the expertise of all communities in Stoke-on-Trent. Exploring the hidden histories of unsung heroes and those who have publicly dedicated their lives to our city is what this mural is all about. The BID is dedicated to celebrating 100 years of Stoke-on-Trent, particularly to honour stories that are woven into the fabric of our community.”
From unsung heroes to local legends, the public’s voices will help decide the faces that represent the past, present and future of Stoke-on-Trent, culminating in a grand mural unveiling and celebratory weekend this autumn to feature music, arts performances and more. Cheryl Taylor, Theatre Director at Regent Theatre & Victoria Hall, will be collaborating with local groups and sectors of society to identify local heroes:
“I’m delighted to be a part of the ‘100 faces mural.”
“It’s an honour to be working in collaboration with the BID team on this important project. Our shared ambition is to celebrate and honour some of the most influential Stokies, as well as uncover some lesser known people that have contributed to the city’s successes over the past 100 years. We aim to share some remarkable stories and create a lasting legacy that will inspire future generations to achieve greatness, remain proud of our heritage and keep the heart of our city beating stronger than ever.”
A dedicated book is set to launch alongside the mural, featuring more information about each face and to provide honourable mentions of other key players in our local history. 100 Years, 100 Faces joins many more events and activities in celebration of Stoke-on-Trent receiving centenary status in 2025.
Following the voting window from 25th February to 28th March, the legacy art project is to be brought to life by local artists Rob Fenton and Alastair Barnett, responsible for a previously produced mural in 2023, celebrating Shelton Bar Steelworks.
Members of the public can nominate who they believe to be deserving of a spot on the mural from 25th February by visiting stokeontrentcitycentre.co.uk.
Details of selected entries will be announced and shared from the very first Stoke-on-Trent Day on 5th June 2025.
